Not consistent on weight - not accurate on bodyfat - so what's the point? August 30, 2010 momreviewz (des moines, IA) This review is for the HB-400. I ordered this scale because of someone recommending the brand on a fitness forum. When I saw it had a cumulative 4-star review and the first few ratings looked really good (consistency and accuracy of weight were both noted), the prices was right too - so I went ahead and ordered. (Please note that I realized later that the first couple GOOD reviews listed are for the HB-500 not the HB-400 - for some reason, both of these products have the reveiws lumped together. This is confusing and deceptive for people who are trying to research before they purchase).
I really like how the scale looks. It's very modern and clean looking. Standing on it I felt very stable. I also like that it has an on off button to conserve the battery power. The button is on the front similar to the wii fit balance board. Setup was quite easy - no problem there.
The problems came when I actually went to weight myself. First weigh in - we'll say I was *cough* 115.6 - yes that sounds about right. So I step off and turn it off. I turn it back on and weigh in immediately again - 115.8. Hmm... that's a little odd. So I step off and turn it off - turn it on and try again - 116.2. Wow - what's going on here - I hate this scale very much all of a sudden. I give it another try... 115.0. Well - that's better... let's try this again... 116.6... ummmmmm...
That's about how my weigh in went. I tried several different times throughout the day - weighing in about 5 or 6 times repeatedly and would come up with a different weight (usually within a pound or 2) each time I'd step on the scale. This is probably a pretty good ROUGH scale - if you're not trying to lose weight or keep track of your weight this scale is probably fine for you - but if you are - this won't work at all. 1 or 2 pounds of fluctuation is not acceptable for a scale used to track weight loss considering 1 or 2 pounds is what one would typically be trying to lose in a week. It'd be really hard to tell if you were successful or not.
I can't speak for the body fat function, I was more concerned about it not being consistent with the weigh in - but from the other reviews, that's not too accurate either. I figure if the weight isn't consistent and the body fat estimate isn't accurate, there was no point to me keeping this scale whatsoever. I mean - I may as well stand in front of a carnie at the fair and have him guess my weight and body fat percentage and use that for my record. It'd be about as random as this scale.
Sending this back and ordering a Tanita with much better reviews. Hope it works! I can live without the body fat function working but I can't live with that big of a fluctuation in weight readings. 2 stars because I think this scale would be ok for those not trying to lose weight but may just want a general idea of what their weight is, and it is an attractive design. But no higher because it's not recommended for those trying to lose weight and need to weigh in regularly.
good product August 30, 2010 victor aldo valadez ayala (México) works great, it has a slight difference from the professional fat monitor that my doctor has, but is almost accurate.
HBF-400 Good Scale, Bad Fat Monitor August 27, 2010 Ravi Thota The scale is pretty accurate but the fat monitor is nothing but a calculator based on Height and Weight...it's useless. BMI is accurate based on Height, Sex, Age and weight.
Works well August 27, 2010 bc I was tired of having a scale that didn't match the one at my doctor's office. This one appears to be more accurate. The settings for Fat Monitor and BMI are handy though I don't use them much. I'm just trying to drop a few pounds and this gives me insight on how I'm doing.
Not as accurate as I would have liked August 23, 2010 J. Chan (Dublin, CA) I base a lot of my purchasing decisions on customer reviews and thought this fat monitor and scale would be decent because of its ratings. It measures weight accurately. BMI is calculated based on your weight and height, so this function is also "accurate." I was frankly a little disappointed because it measured my body fat incorrectly - my body fat was way higher than what is reasonable.
Body fat percentage may be inaccurate in the following situations (and this is from the instruction manual):
- Children
- Elderly people
- People with a fever
- Body builders or highly trained athletes
- Patients undergoing dialysis
- Patients with osteoporosis who have very low bone density
- Women who are pregnant
- Post-menopausal women
- People having swelling
1) I'm an Asian female, so maybe my bone density is lower than the average American. I don't know how this would effect the reading.
2) The fat loss monitor utilizes the BI (Biological Impedance) method, so I'm not sure how accurate that is and if it actually works well with my body type.
In conclusion, this product is okay. I think this weight loss tool is good for keeping track of your weight and BMI, but I'd think twice about it for body fat percentage (which is why I bought it). You're better off with measuring tape and using a body fat calculator online: [...]
